Brand new comedy brings the ‘retail battlefield’ to life for Channel 4
PhoneShop
On High Street UK the priority is to 'shift units, make money, smash targets...' and no one knows that better than the staff of PhoneShop. New recruit Christopher is on the infamous one day trial, but will he make a sale by 6.00pm and secure the job, or will he be yet another victim of the vicious “retail battlefield”? This world, so familiar to us all, has been brought to life in brand new comedy, PhoneShop.
PhoneShop has been written, directed and produced by Phil Bowker (Sharon Horgan's Pulling, Sean Lock's 15 Storeys High) and a hugely-talented ensemble cast, including Martin Trenaman (The Inbetweeners, 15 Storeys High), Andrew Brooke (Pulling, The IT Crowd, The Inbetweeners), Javone Prince (Little Miss Jocelyn, Angelo's), Emma Fryer (Home Time, Ideal), and Tom Bennett (Pulling, Ricky Gervais Comic Relief 2009 film).
It’s Monday morning and, at his team-meeting PhoneShop manager Lance (Trenaman) has some bad news: top mobile phone salesman Little Gary Patel has been arrested for the latest in a very long-line of violent offences, and he’s not coming back. Lance’s next bit of news: Gary’s tiny shoes are to be filled by nice guy and sales novice Christopher (Bennett).
Within minutes of starting Christopher soon learns that his first day will be more testing than he can ever have imagined as Lance shares a little too much information about himself; self-styled “Kings of the High Street” Ashley (Brooke) and Jerwayne (Prince) accuse him of racism; and corporate-wannabe Janine (Fryer) demands that he doesn’t fall in love with her.
Will Christopher make it through the day and take his place with the rest of the team at the top of the High Street hierarchy? Will Janine convince Lance to move her from the misery of Pay-As-You-Go and into proper mobile contract sales? Will Jerwayne let his snobby attitude to girls in polo shirts get in the way of some fun?
